Interview with Dr. Chenet Larose Part I
Dr. Chenet Larose escaped Haiti with his family during the early 1970s right after the death of the brutal François “Papa Doc” Duvalier. Hoping that Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier would rule more democratically, Chenet Larose wrote and wanted to publish an open letter with a friend to encourage Baby Doc to promote democracy. Instead, they were warned to get out of the country to stay alive. Once Dr. Larose landed in Philly as part of the Haitian migration in the 1970s, he would eventually become the owner of a restaurant in the heart of Germantown that would become an important locus of the Philadelphia jazz community.
