Dr. Chenet Larose, owner of La Rose Jazz Club Part Two
Dr. Larose discusses his parents migrating to America and settling in with a Haitian community in Philadelphia. They worked cutting doors for Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, a company that employed Haitian immigrants on Chelten avenue in Philly. Dr. LaRose also mentions a musician Jean Robert who used to laughingly pretend that Dr. Larose taught him guitar. Who he is referring to is Jean Robert Pamphile, who was the leader of the Top Gyps, a famous Haitian group who was big in the 1970s during the Haitian diaspora. Dr. Larose also talks about buying his club in 1998 on Germantown Avenue hoping to bring Haitian music and food to the neighborhood, but when jazz legend Byard Lancaster discovered the club, he introduced Dr. Larose to the jazz community and the rest is history.
